Disability Income Insurance
Disability income insurance (DI insurance) pays you a monthly benefit if you no longer earn an income due to a qualifying illness or injury.   white space Man fishing

For the purposes of your retirement strategy, the most critical insurance you need during your accumulation years may be disability coverage. If you were unable to earn an income because of a illness or injury, your goal of saving during your working years may be difficult to achieve. You may even have to draw from your retirement accounts prematurely to make up for lost income.

Most employers offer some level of disability coverage; however, many people discover that it’s not enough. It’s important to work with a financial professional to see if current employer-provided coverage meets your needs. If not, individual DI insurance can help provide you with additional coverage when you need it most.

How you’ll benefit

With DI insurance, a long-term illness or injury does not have to significantly affect your ability to handle daily expenses. Your coverage can help you:

  • Pay the mortgage
  • Handle loan payments
  • Cover the cost of food and utilities
  • Manage your health insurance expenses
  • Keep your retirement accounts and savings intact
  • Offset the high price of hospital bills
  • Enable a family member to take time from work to assist you

When to consider

One in three working Americans will become disabled for 90 days or more before age 65.1 Of that group, 10% will be disabled for five years or more.1 And people with disabilities are almost three times as likely as people without disabilities to live in poverty.2

Weighing these potential losses against the cost of DI insurance will help you decide if it’s the right protection for you during your working years.

Take the next step

Contact a Thrivent Financial representative to learn more about how disability insurance can protect you and your retirement assets.
